Ritual is both a process and a procedure. The steps common to most rituals will be discussed in Chapter 4. In its secular sense of “habitual action,” a ritual can be your customary morning routine. It’s the foggy, groggy, automatic way you get out of bed, go to the bathroom, wash, and get dressed. Your morning ritual can include all the little informal ceremonies you create to bless your day and make it work better. It can be the way you get ready to do some task. Ritual elements in our daily lives can be mundane (the way we put our socks on) but we can also use rituals to make our lives more beautiful, like setting fresh flowers on the table or desk, unpacking and washing Grandma’s dishes for Thanksgiving, writing thank-you notes, or helping our children prepare for their first day of school or graduation (major rituals in themselves).

The Goddess myths, eons older than the Genesis myth, describe how She gave birth to the universe and everything in it. ”8 If that is so, her DNA lives in everyone alive today, and it means we really are all related. Consider the love and support your exchange with your friends, the help and information you exchange with both co-workers and people you hardly know, the unconditional love and entertainment you receive from the animals that live with you. Consider the lessons you’ve learned from the people who are no longer in your life, and why they’re no longer in your life.

Breathe in this light so it also fills your body. Feel the peace and love, the freshness and joy of this light in your life. Feel the energy of the things around you rising and joining the candlelight. Feel this energy flowing into every cell in your body. You can open your eyes and read the following blessing or tape it beforehand and listen to it. You can also use it as a model to write your own words of blessing. I bless myself and these things around me these things that make the circle of my life.
